Bartley Melocco is an acupuncturist well known for his patient-focussed treatment and care, who knows first-hand the benefits this therapy can bring. The founder of a multidisciplinary clinic where its qualified practitioners collaborate together to treat the local community, Bartley’s areas of specialisation include: musculoskeletal pain and sports injury; women’s health; anxiety and stress; fertility (male and female); immune disorders; pregnancy and postnatal care; sleep disturbance; digestion and nutrition. Bartley’s specialisation has developed through postgraduate education and current medical research. His musculoskeletal pain relief treatments originate from Master Tung and Dr Wei Young, his five-element spirit-based treatment from Prof Jack Worsley, neo-classical pulse diagnosis from Professor Leon Hammer and Dr John Shen for treatment of modern day pathologies. Bartley’s interest in the human condition started while he was working behind the scenes as a construction rigger in the local and international rock ’n’ roll, film and television industries. He witnessed and experienced the many highs and lows of the lifestyle in these industries and the challenges for the physical and psychological health of both artists and crew. During those periods of working long shifts, Bartley found relief by receiving acupuncture and it was while on a treatment table that he had an epiphany and decided on a career change that led him to study a Bachelor of Health Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1998. Bartley has travelled extensively through Europe, Asia and South America, studying yoga, Vedic meditation, Qigong and bio energetic healing. He regularly works with GPs, psychologists, osteopaths, midwives and naturopaths to provide additional support for those with more complicated health conditions. Bartley empowers his clients to look at their exercise routine, diet, lifestyle and work practices to help bring about a greater feeling of wellbeing and peace of mind. He loves seeing his clients smile again in good health as they return to pain-free living, and assisting them to feel more peace in their life. Bartley is also a management committee member and volunteer acupuncturist at the Ways Centre in North Bondi, a not-for-profit organisation providing onsite senior high school education, healthcare, counselling and support for at-risk teens from 14 to 17 years of age. When he’s not at work, Bartley can be found enjoying surfing with his family at Bondi Beach, working in the local community garden or walking his chocolate Labrador, Bella. Read more

A treatment begins with getting your health history including extensive questioning about all aspects of your condition. This is followed by an examination, in which Bartley feels the pulses, examines the tongue and palpates the channels, which gives him a lot of information about the internal state of the body. The appropriate treatment will then be decided upon (acupuncture, moxibustion or cupping). Typically, if it is a new problem, improvement and/ or resolution may only take a few treatments. If the problem has been around for months or years, a longer course of treatment may be required. A typical course of treatment usually lasts somewhere between four to six sessions. The insertion of acupuncture needles allows the proper flow along the circuit to be re-established, allowing the channels and their corresponding internal organs to return to a balanced state, and the body to normal physiological functioning. This can mean freedom from pain and mental fatigue, and an increase in vitality to help you live your life more fully and creatively. Moxibustion is the use of the herb Chinese mugwort, called moxa, on the skin to warm specific acupuncture points or areas like the abdomen. Moxa comes in a fine ground texture that is made into small cones and used either on the end of a needle or placed on the skin. The top is then lit and burns down a little way, creating a pleasant, penetrating warmth, used to warm the yang of the body. Cupping is a therapy used to treat muscle pain or the early stages of colds and flu. Glass cups with suction are placed on the skin, usually on the back, and moved around for a short period of time to remove lactic acid from tight muscle groups. If appropriate, you will receive dietary, herbal and lifestyle recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of your treatments. Read more
