Derek is an accredited mental health social worker, qualified counsellor and art therapist.
Using a transpersonal and Jungian approach, he specialises in working with adults who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD-1) and Asperger's as well as clients with alcohol and drug addiction and members of the LGBTIQA+ and intersex community. Talking doesn't always work, so Derek also uses art therapy and principles of sandplay.
Having a particular passion for dream work, Derek loves working with ... the unconscious to explore dreams and their meaning. In his sessions, he will often ask his clients about their recent dreams as he finds these often provide powerful information to help further reflect on the material being discussed.
Derek completed a Bachelor of Social Work with the University of Tasmania in 1998 and also holds a Diploma of Transpersonal Counselling and an Advanced Diploma of Transpersonal Art Therapy.
With a thirst for knowledge and a commitment to ongoing professional development, Derek is a lifelong learner. In 2021, he plans to do more training in couples counselling using the Gottman Method as well as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Based in Lismore, Derek provides his services in person and online and also runs regular group art therapy workshops.
Derek has a fascination in weather, clouds and in particular, cirrus clouds. Meteorologically when cirrus clouds fill the sky it signifies a change in the weather, hence his signature tagline: "When cirrus clouds fill the sky, know that change is on the way".
He looks forward to supporting you in your journey towards wellness. Read more
