As Australia and New Zealand’s leading end of life education and doula training organisation, Helen and her team have trained over 500 end of life doulas. End of life doulas assist a person with a diagnosis and those close to them to help explore their options, provide access to education and resources, and connect support networks to provide the best end of life possible. Sometimes also known as ‘death doulas’, they adopt a holistic approach to providing a continuum of care up to, including, and beyond the time of death, walking alongside families through the many stages of end of life. Following the success of their popular 1-day and 4-day courses, and the recognised need in the medical community for a Certificate IV, they are now offering the world’s first nationally accredited end of life doula qualification of the a 10966NAT Certificate IV in End of Life Doula Services. This qualification has been designed, developed and will be delivered by Preparing the Way in partnership with Essentials Skills Training and Recruitment RTO 91729. Participants come from a broad range of backgrounds, bringing their compassion and a desire to make a difference for others after their own experiences with death or professional work. They “feel the calling” to lean into conversations about death and make a difference to people at this often challenging time. Trained in TCM and Reiki, Helen has more than 30 years of experience working with the very ill and dying. Working across public and private palliative/ hospice situations, she has extensive practical experience and deep insight into health and healing. The death experiences of her own parents, family, friends and many clients, and her passion for education that transforms, led Helen to establishing Preparing the Way in 2015. She now brings her wealth of knowledge to hundreds of doulas, clients and their families and those close to them. Helen’s vision is for all people to be empowered with choice at end of life and for all people to be supported by trained end of life doulas. As we approach the silver tsunami, Helen and the team at Preparing the Way, have big plans to further expand this vital training into aged care, in-home care and community providers to meet this huge service delivery needs and gaps. Helen shares many stories of direct experiences she has had in her cherished role as an end of life doula. Through those stories and the sharing of deep personal experience, growth and reflection, along with research on best practice, Helen delivers both profoundly insightful and practical training. Just as there are many options at end of life, there are also many options for training and education so you can choose what fulfils your goals and doula-heart. Whether you’re curious about the role of an end of life doula, feel pulled toward helping others, or want to enhance your end of life care skills, Helen can give you the training you need. She welcomes you to join her and all other end of life doulas to honour the outgoing journey and walk the path to something bigger. Read more

It is perfect for you if you are interested in caring for someone close to you in your life or if you are looking at working professionally as an end of life doula in your community. Maybe you are testing the waters to see if this is something for you? Or, as so many tell us, you feel ‘called’ to this work and are committed to making a difference to people at end of life (just as we are!). Maybe you are shopping around looking at all your options in this training space? Maybe you already work in the health-related sector and want to diversify your skills? Wherever and whoever you are, our EOL Foundation Workshop: - Increases people’s awareness, understanding and overall knowledge about end of life concerns (across all 10 stages of end of life) in a non-clinical/ medical way. - Has people leave with more questions than they came in with. We celebrate that because it shows their minds, hearts and world have been opened up to new possibilities and they now know so much more about this whole end of life space. - Supports people to have conversations with those they care about, take action in their own end of life planning and have courage (where perhaps before they didn’t). The foundation workshop end of life doula training is delivered either over one full day or 2 half days. It is a journey beginning with the big picture of end of life, beginning to truly understand a lot of the common questions, concepts and principles related to end of life such as: - What holistic palliative care is (not just the medical/clinical version) - What is conscious dying? - What are our death and end of life preferences and how do we ensure we get them? - How do we support our person dying at home if that is what they prefer? - How do we retain capacity, control and choice around our own end of life? - What are all the parts of paperwork and other plans we need to consider? - What is the difference between how care is provided in a hospital, palliative care unit or hospice? - What are the 10 stages of end of life and what do I need to know about them: – What conversations are relevant? – What resources are relevant? – What planning is relevant and how do I best support someone in those stages? - Who and what is a doula, and what do they actually do? Our educators are highly skilled, experienced and passionate people and end of life doulas. They share many stories of actual real-life situations so that you really get a strong feeling for this work and also your capacity to fulfil this, if it is a dream for you. It’s a big day (or two half days) and training is delivered on Zoom. You will receive all course materials and a certificate of completion. It’s full, rich and our groups are small so you get to be with like-minded people and explore this sensitive yet beautiful time of a person’s life. Please come join us and expand the conversation and awareness around end of life in our families, communities and our world. Our world needs you. **You will need to be fully booked at least one week before to allow time for your training manual to be express posted to you.** Read more

The Foundation Workshop, which is the pre-requisite to the 4-day intensive, is like skimming a stone over the river. It touches many times, but doesn’t go deeply. The Foundation Workshop is a pre-requisite for this course as well as a two-part preparation project in between the two courses. This way, everyone begins the 4-day intensive with the same baseline knowledge. Our 4-day intensive dives deep. The first day begins an immersion experience where each person tells a personal end of life story which creates a deep wealth of heartfelt sharing and kinship. People connect deeply in this training and often become lifelong friends. Over the following 3 days, we work with our experiences from different angles. There is group work, work completed in pairs, lots of conversations, stories, and deep interaction. We deep dive on who we have to ‘be’ to do this work – it is transformational and healing. We cover things like listening in new ways, being with, self-care, grief and bereavement, compassion and resilience, meditation and complementary therapies. We deep dive on what we ‘do’ in this work – it is confidence-giving, inspiring and extensive. Some of the things we cover are the difference between pain and suffering and ways to make a difference to both, planning, after death holistic care, funeral planning, ritual, bathing and dressing the body, cooling mechanisms for safe after death care of the deceased, end of life law in each state of Australia and more. We deep dive on the steps to starting a business in this work – it is encouraging, motivating and empowering. We cover things like what a doula actually does (over 30 different possibilities!), how to share what we do with people, fee and service packages and structures, our business responsibilities (ethics, privacy, confidentiality, record keeping), how and where we promote and market ourselves, what’s next in our professional and personal development, next steps and support available after the training. This 4-day intensive is run across four consecutive days online via Zoom. You will receive your course manual, resources and certificate of completion. You also receive access to our 6-part masterclass series covering Advance Care Planning, Ethics and Documentation, Branding and Marketing, Holding a Death Cafe, Making Kick Ar*e Presentations and more! After your course, we offer an impressive and meaningful array of support structures, services and mentoring to our doulas. It does not stop with the training - that is just the beginning of this wonderful road we walk. To ensure individual support and to maximise interaction, participation and learning outcomes for all, we keep classes to an intimate size. Come and join us. Come and fulfil that longing you have to make a difference. Be courageous and step into this conversation that most turn away from. Together, we will make an enormous difference in our world. **You will need to be fully booked at least two weeks before to allow time for your training manual and other resources to be express posted to you** Read more
