Psychologist | Relationship Therapist | Imago Relationship Therapy Specialist Randwick, Sydney NSW | In Person + Telehealth Philipa Thornton is a compassionate and highly qualified psychologist dedicated to helping individuals and couples heal, grow and reconnect to themselves and one another. Based in Sydney, she brings more than two decades of professional experience to her work, specialising in Imago Relationship Therapy, Resource Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). Her practice is grounded in the belief that we are all capable of meaningful change and that love, when nurtured through understanding and communication, can be one of life’s most powerful healing forces. As the co-founder of Marriage Works and the Resource Therapy Institute Australia, which she operates alongside her husband and fellow psychologist Chris Thornton, Philipa combines clinical excellence with heartfelt empathy. Together, they provide relationship counselling, professional supervision, and training for therapists, both online and in person. Their signature program, Getting the Love You Want—based on the principles of Imago Therapy—has helped countless couples transform patterns of conflict into pathways of connection. Philipa’s approach integrates the latest findings in neuroscience and trauma-informed practice with the timeless wisdom of attachment theory and person-centred psychology. She works intuitively and holistically, addressing the emotional, cognitive, and somatic aspects of healing. Whether supporting someone through anxiety, trauma recovery, grief, or communication challenges, she provides practical tools to foster resilience, emotional safety, and self-understanding. Her extensive qualifications include a BA (Hons) in Psychology, a Graduate Diploma in Systemic Couple Therapy, and a Graduate Diploma in Psychology from the University of Western Sydney, along with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from Victoria University (New Zealand). A Master Trainer in Resource Therapy, she is also a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), the Australian Association of Relationship Counsellors, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and EMDRAA (EMDR Association of Australia). Philipa’s clients appreciate her warmth, humour, and ability to create a safe and non-judgmental space where authentic transformation can unfold. Her mission is to help people rediscover their natural capacity for love, joy, and vitality—within themselves and in their relationships. Outside of her professional life, Philipa is energised by yoga, Argentine tango, and travel, each reflecting her passion for connection, creativity, and lifelong learning. Through her practice and teaching, Philipa continues to empower individuals and couples to break free from painful patterns, integrate their emotional experiences, and cultivate relationships grounded in empathy, respect, and conscious communication.
