Being Kind to Yourself

The inner journey is a journey of kindness—to be gentle and compassionate with ourselves. It invites us to observe our own hearts and minds, to notice the little patterns and idiosyncrasies that may be sabotaging our well-being and happiness. Once we recognise these patterns, we can begin to transform them.

When we observe these aspects of ourselves, we mustn’t feel discouraged, nor fall into self-criticism or compare ourselves with others. This is our journey. We accept it as it is, for it is deeply personal and unique. Everything that we are today is a result of the collective past we’ve lived through. Since each of us has travelled a different path, there is no need to compare our journey with anyone else’s.

By looking inward with acceptance and understanding, we expand our hearts. This expansion allows us to be more accommodating, not only towards ourselves but also towards others. When we embrace ourselves completely as we are, we naturally learn to embrace others as they are.

Self-kindness doesn’t just change the way we treat ourselves—it transforms the way we experience the world. When we are gentle with ourselves, we become less reactive and more compassionate in our relationships. We begin to recognise that everyone carries their own burdens and has their own inner struggles. This awareness helps us cultivate empathy, patience, and understanding toward others.

Think of a time when you felt deeply frustrated with someone. Often, that frustration is a reflection of something unresolved within ourselves. When we practice kindness inwardly, it’s as if we soften the sharp edges of our reactions. Instead of harsh judgments, we offer grace. Instead of withdrawing or retaliating, we create space for connection.

In this way, self-kindness becomes a bridge to healthier relationships. It breaks down walls of defensiveness and opens us to authentic communication. It invites vulnerability and fosters deeper connections. When we are kind to ourselves, we show up as more present, loving, and accepting human beings, capable of nurturing both ourselves and those around us.

Moreover, the impact of self-kindness extends beyond relationships—it touches the very core of our mental and emotional well-being. Many of us carry silent burdens of self-criticism, perfectionism, and unworthiness. These patterns often play like background music in our minds, subtly affecting our confidence, mood, and outlook on life.

When we practice being kind to ourselves, we begin to rewire these mental patterns. Self-kindness teaches us that we are enough as we are. It silences the inner critic and replaces it with a gentle, supportive voice. Over time, this shift creates a foundation of self-trust and resilience. We feel more grounded, more capable of navigating challenges without being overwhelmed by fear or doubt.

Imagine waking up each day and greeting yourself with compassion rather than criticism. Instead of thinking, “I should have done better,” we think, “I did my best today, and that’s enough.” This simple yet profound shift can reduce anxiety, lift our spirits, and cultivate a deeper sense of peace within.

Kindness is also about letting go—releasing thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve us. It frees us from the bondage of old patterns and opens the door to new possibilities. As we let go of self-imposed limitations, we make room for growth, joy, and a more authentic expression of who we are.

May we love ourselves the way we wish to be loved.

May we always be there for ourselves.

May we fill our minds with benevolent thoughts and break free from the limitations that keep us confined to the ordinary.

May we live a life full of peace, love, and prosperity.

Remember, self-kindness is not a one-time practice; it is a daily choice. It’s in the small moments—when we pause to breathe deeply, when we forgive ourselves for mistakes, when we prioritise rest and nourishment. Each act of kindness we offer ourselves strengthens our capacity to thrive.

Wishing you a loving day filled with kindness…

Inner Work Coach

Varun is a spiritual friend who offers gentle, heartfelt guidance through contemplation, mindfulness, and self-observation. Rooted in lived experience rather than labels, he does not identify as a healer, therapist, or guru. Instead, Varun walks the path as a fellow explorer—one who simply shares pointers with co-travelers seeking to reconnect with their true nature.

Having spent years working as a software architect, Varun eventually recognized that his deepest calling—his Ikigai—lay in inner work and sharing insights from the journey within. What began as a personal exploration gradually evolved into a space of quiet service, where he now supports others in navigating life’s challenges with poise, grace, and inner resilience.

In a world marked by constant noise and uncertainty, Varun believes these times call for us to become fortresses from within. As he continues to work with the self, his wish is to walk alongside others—to help them begin this inward journey and cultivate a space where serenity, peace, love, and stability are available even amidst external chaos.

He also expresses this journey through writing and regularly shares reflections through his newsletter—gentle reminders to slow down, to observe, and to return home to what is real and essential.
