Connecting With Our Authentic Self Through The Gift Of Creativity

Connecting With Our Authentic Self Through The Gift Of Creativity

When I was a little girl, I loved to write. My imaginative stories, written at school, often won the "Writer of the Week" award, and I would while away hours in my bedroom, writing.

As a teenager, I had piles of paper everywhere with unfinished poems, diaries, notes from motivational books, affirmations, dreams of the future … you name it, I had it.

My mum, feeling frustrated and liking the house tidy, would regularly say, “I hate to think how your house will be when you grow up, Melanie”.

It was a passion and something that came naturally to me. Being an introvert, it was how I expressed myself best and often how I worked out my thoughts and feelings.

When I wrote, there was no need to worry about what the other person was thinking of me or if I was saying the wrong thing.

There was no holding back. It was just me, the pen and a piece of paper that couldn’t talk back. I did it because I loved it, plain and simple!

Creativity is our true nature. We are ourselves creations, and we are meant to continue creativity by being creative ourselves.

Creative Expression

Some find joy in writing, others in music, art, hairdressing, building, cooking, fashion and so on. Whatever your creative gift, you deserve to share it, and it is important that you do, both for your own fulfilment and to help raise the vibration of this planet.

Becoming our true selves is really a process that eventuates in us coming back to who we are. Who are we anyway? We are energy. Energy is us. The same energy that makes up everything in nature is the energy that we are made of, too.

You know that yearning for creativity that calls you? That’s the same energy force craving expression. To deny its expression is to pretend to be someone other than who you are and to deny the world the enjoyment of your gift.

Arriving at that place where we are ready and able to express our creativity can often mean a bumpy, painful journey, and we may have many excuses/fears at first. We may think, ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘What if I fail?’, ‘I should be happy with what I have’, ‘There’s not enough time’, ‘It’s too late’, ‘What will my friends/family think of me?’, ’Dreams don’t matter’, ‘I need to be realistic’, ‘I’ll wait until I have made more money’, etc.

All of these feelings will eventually dissipate.

"We cannot escape fear. We can only transform it into a companion that accompanies us on all our exciting adventures … Take a risk a day – one small or bold stroke that will make you feel great once you have done it." - Susan Jeffers

The Voice Within

We must start by listening to the voice within (our intuition/gut) and trusting it to guide us. We must remember that we are enough and no matter what others say about us, we have something great to offer.

"Trust that still, small voice that says ‘this might work and I’ll try it’."
- Diane Mariechild

We can connect with our creativity by:

Meditation – this will help us to acknowledge our connection to an inner power source that has the ability to transform our outer world.

Solitude – spending time alone, especially in nature.

Spending time with others who are in touch with/getting in touch with their creativity and distancing ourselves from those who criticise us and the way we choose to live.

Affirmations

  • “As I create and listen, I will be led”
  • “I am willing to learn to let myself be creative”
  • “I am willing to be of service through my creativity” and other such affirmations

Using windows of time for small, creative acts.

Learning to be kind to ourselves. Doing nice things for and speaking kindly to ourselves.

Clearing clutter to clear negative energy and make room for new, positive energy.

We don’t always need to know what we’re doing. We don’t always have to be perfect. We just need to get started being creative. Done is better than perfect!

As we begin to open our creative channel, many powerful changes can be expected in our lives. That is because, as we move toward our dreams, we move toward divinity. Our dreams and yearnings come from the source/divine spirit/God (whatever you wish to call that all-encompassing, loving, creative energy).

Yes, connecting with our authentic self is a journey, and it’s often bumpy, but that is how we learn and grow, and it’s well worth the effort.
