The Australian Sound Healers Association Ltd (ASHA) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to advancing the practice, education, and professional recognition of sound and vibrational therapy across Australia and beyond. Founded with a grassroots, trauma-informed vision, ASHA unites practitioners, educators, and the public in a shared commitment to healing through sound.

ASHA offers a nationally recognised Sound Therapy Practitioner Diploma, supports its members with insurance access, peer networks, and ongoing professional development, and maintains a growing directory of qualified sound therapists.

Through research, training, advocacy, and community, ASHA is helping position sound therapy as a credible, ethical, and impactful modality within mainstream wellness and mental health support systems.

Standard of acceptance for each therapies
ASHA Standards of Acceptance for Sound Therapies As Australia’s peak body for sound therapy, ASHA accepts a broad range of sound and vibrational healing modalities. However, all modalities must meet minimum standards for safety, integrity, professionalism, and alignment with trauma-informed practice. Accepted Modalities (if Practitioner is Appropriately Trained): - Gong Therapy - Singing Bowls (Crystal, Tibetan, etc.) - Tuning Fork Therapy (standard or weighted) - Voice Work (toning, mantra, vocal toning) - Drumming for wellness - Handpan and Tongue Drums - Flutes and melodic instruments (e.g. Native American-style, shakuhachi) - Sound Baths & Group Sound Meditations - Vibroacoustic Therapy - Binaural Beats / Brainwave Entrainment (must be used ethically and with consent) - Sound Massage (e.g. bowls on body) – if trained All practices must be: - Trauma-aware and respectful of nervous system sensitivity - Used with informed consent - Operated within the practitioner’s scope of training - Referred out when beyond a practitioner’s qualifications (e.g. severe mental health, complex trauma) - ❌ Not Accepted Under ASHA Registration: - Modalities making unsubstantiated medical claims - Practices involving psychedelics or plant medicine unless approved under legal clinical supervision - Any service marketed as a cure or substitute for medical care - Untrained use of invasive or touch-based techniques - Aggressive vocal catharsis techniques not supported by evidence or risk guidelines - Any modality that disregards the need for client consent, safety, and cultural sensitivity
CPD requirements
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) - ASHA encourages all members to engage in ongoing professional development to deepen their skills, expand their knowledge, and uphold trauma-informed, ethical sound therapy practice. - While ASHA does not currently enforce mandatory CPD hours, we recommend practitioners: - Stay informed on trauma-aware care, mental health, and ethical practice - Continue learning through sound therapy workshops, supervision, peer groups, or personal study - Document relevant training or study for future reference - A formal CPD framework is currently under development to support member excellence, insurance alignment, and national accreditation pathways.
